MIT - Whitaker College Laboratory

Life Sciences > Biotech

McPhee provided turn-key electrical services to update major systems and to bring the research laboratories current with the latest building codes.  Work included complete upgrades to modern laboratory suites with complex heat recovery systems utilized in over 90 fume hoods in the building.  With a peak electrical work crew topping out at more than 30, McPhee was able to work within very congested operating conditions.

Creative field management kept the meticulously planned and phased project on time and budget.  Whitaker College (Building E25) is one wing of an L-shaped 267,000 square foot medical building on MIT's East Campus and is linked by a full-height atrium to MIT's Health Services Center.

The project took place in an active research facility with ongoing experiments and has an existing emergency distribution system shared with an adjacent MIT infirmary hospital building that operates 24 hours a day 365 days per year. The building remained partially occupied during the entire construction process by users who were particularly sensitive to extended shutdowns and disruptions which led to complexities for the McPhee team.
